Parent Media Behavior And Tablet Computer Use Among Pre-school Children In Guangzhou

Recent years have seen a growing concern on how pre-school children use the tablet. More and more children use tablet when they are only babies, therefore more and more concerns about the effect on the children come out. How pre-school children use tablet? To what extent parents’ media behavior influences their children as being the primary group of pre-school children? This study used a questionnaire on 200 pre-school children and their parents from Guangzhou to collect data. Interviews with some pre-school children, parents and experts together with observation on how preschool children play App games are also used to answer the questions.The survey found that, pre-school children from Guangzhou play little with touchscreen tablets in their daily life. The two favorite item on touchscreen are cartoon videos and games. Parents adopt a lot of restrictive guidance on children’s application while little parental-children coviewing and parental guidance are adopted. Therefore conflict between children and parents comes out continually. Secondly, parents’ media behavior and attitude to touchscreen tablets influences their children in different extent. The items children play on tablets are quite similar to their parents. Parents who use cellphone and computer more often, their children use tablets more often. Children conflict with parents more often play tablets especially games more often. Finally, a solution was ventured and some strategies advanced to improve pre-school children’s literacy of using tablet.
