The rapid developments of electronic technology, computer technology and communication technology have driven the automatic process of the electric power industry. The traditional meter reading modes are gradually changed to the active reporting modes which rely on the network transmission. It ensures that the meter reading process is real-time, safe and accurate.The whole remote meter reading system consists of a main station, concentrators, collectors, carrier sheets and hand-held terminals. The main function of the concentrator is to connect multiple collectors or carrier tables. In this range, the reading work of all carrier tables is completed by concentrator. And then, the results are sent to the master station. Furthermore, the hand-held terminal is a tool which can exchange data with the concentrator and PC directly within a short distance. In order to maintain and inspect the concentrator more conveniently, the idea of designing maintenance software has been developed. According to the practical demand, using the LM10JS concentrator in China Southern Power Grid as designing object, the thesis achieved the design and implementation of PC maintenance software and hand-held terminal maintenance software.This thesis introduces the composition of the remote communication system, the communication methods and the communication protocol. The system combined the design of software with the experiment tests of the system. Based on LM10JS concentrator, the thesis constructed a simplified version of the remote meter reading system. Based on the platform of.NET4.0, C# language has been applied to design and complete the host computer maintenance software. In addition, TP900 hand-held terminal of Zhenzhong Company and C language have been used to design and implement the hand-held terminal maintenance software. The computer maintenance software includes three parts:the user interface design, the communication mode and protocol processing. In the first part, the user interface is divided into the tools area, the state area and the data display area. The communication methods include the serial communication, the network communication and the GPRS communication. Multi-thread technology is used to isolate the different communication methods, running at the same time but not influencing with each other. At last, with the use of object-oriented thinking, the protocol processing class has been encapsulated. The framing function and the decoding frame function have been designed. Hand-held maintenance software sends a command to the concentrator mainly by infrared wireless communication. It is an auxiliary tool of PC maintenance software, which is easier to use. A large number of experimental tests of the whole system are performed. The test results show that the design of the maintenance software could run well and also reaches a steady state level of memory, providing a maintenance and inspection tool for the remote meter reading system.
