Nowadays, more and more explorers and observer satellites have been lunched, and most of these spacecrafts have image generating equipment. Meanwhile, the quality of the images generated by these equipment is also improving, and that poses a challenge towards on board image compression units which are used to make more efficient use of the limited transmission bandwidth. In this article, the CCSDS image data compression recommendation, which is a standard targeted towards on board image data compression, has been studied and also enhanced to allow parallel processing. The task of image compression process can be divided into 2 stages: wavelet transformation and bit plane encoding. In this article, we experimented with the 5/3integer discrete wavelet which is used in the JPEG2000 standard to lower the hardware resource usage. In the bit plane encoding stage, we parallelized the AC coefficient encoding of each bit plane, and therefore gain higher throughput. Also, parallel AC coefficient encoding make it possible to save the storage needed to save intermediate results. To verify its correctness, the CCSDS image compression recommendation and proposed enhancement are implemented using visual C#. We also experimented with different parameters to examine their effect on the compression result. The experiment results showed that although the AC coefficient encoding stage has been parallelized, its binary output layout is still compatible with that defined by the original standard...
