With the continuous development of digital archives,builders and managers will find thehardware facilities in the computer center are more and more difficult to cope with thebusiness growing. More and more applications need more and more servers. The directsolution is to buy new hardware devices, but this will cause the unlimited increase of thepurchase and maintenance costs, and will also restricted by the space and environment. On theother hand, with the upgrade of computer hardware, if continue using the traditional mode todeploy one application on one server, deploy the old applications on the new and highperformance servers, the “big horse pulling small cart” phenomenon will appear, causingserious waste of server resources. Archivists are facing problems including how to effectivelymanage the fast-growing servers and improve their utilization, reduce the time and workloadof application deployment and migration, saving the cost of construction and maintenance,providing stable and efficient services to the users.To solve the problems above, this paper designed a Digital Archives ServerVirtualization solution base on the VMware vSphere software, and carried out research onrelated issues. First, this paper analyzed the background of the construction of digital archivesand server virtualization technology development, surveyed current research situations atinternal and abroad, pointed out the bottleneck problems of the digital archives informationtechnology construction. Then introduced the definition and construction content of digitalarchives, the definition, principles and classification of virtualization technology, showedadvantages of server virtualization in cost saving, improve operating efficiency and reliabilityby introducing successful cases. And then designed the specific programs for the digitalarchives server virtualization base on the VMware vSphere software platform, described themethods and steps in detail, illustrated that the server virtualization solution can effectivelyintegrate digital archives servers by assessing. Finally, illustrated the ways and means shouldbe taken by analysis two server virtualization success examples, in order to ensure thesuccessful implementation of digital archives server virtualization, improve the reliability andstability of the digital archives, and to provide users with high quality and uninterruptedaccess services.
