The Research And Application Of Server Virtualization In University Data Center

In recent years, information construction of universities has been developed rapidly and various business systems have been built. They are playing a decisive role in teaching, scientific research, management, life etc. A lot of business systems have brought the increased number of servers due to the lack of unified planning. The data centers are facing the lack of resource utilization, the inflexible of resource allocation, expansibility, the difficulty of the management, high-energy consumption and many other challenges. How to change the situation of the data centers, has become an important content of the construction of digital campus. Virtual technology that developed in cloud computing background has been highly concerned by the domestic and foreign universities.Based on the study of virtualization and the monitoring and analysis to the server application status of data center of Zhejiang University of Science and Technology, the VMware vSphere virtualization software has been selected to design a set of virtual construction of university data center server scheme and apply to data center of Zhejiang University of Science and Technology, and achieved satisfactory results.The integration of virtual data center server has reduced the number of servers greatly, reduced the energy consumption of data centers, saved the cost of investment and reduced the difficulty of management. The application of technology of VMware vMotion, VMware DRS and VMware HA has made the virtual machine resource in the cluster allocate uniformity, made the provision of the resources accord to the needs of business and made the resource utilization from less than10%to more than50%.Online live migration of virtual machines not only ensures the continuity of the service, but avoids single point of failure.This server virtualization scheme not only solves the problem existing in the traditional data center, but also has the flexible expansion ability, which satisfies the needs of the long-term development of information. This scheme has certain reference value and guiding to the integration of data center resource of universities.
