Framework Analysis On "Self-guided Tour In Taiwan" In Mainland China And Taiwan Newspapers

“Self-guided tour in Taiwan" means people from mainland China go visitingTaiwan, which is stated as "Individuals come visiting Taiwan from mainland China".This agreement signed in2011was a big event between mainland China and Taiwan."Self-guided tour in Taiwan" contributes to the economy cooperation and culturecommunication, benefits residents from both sides, and meanwhile indicates thecross-strait relationship stepping into a brand new stage. Since the effect of thisassignment, cross-strait media have both paid much attention on such issue. However,cross-strait press media have been respectively reporting from different points, givingdifferent explanations due to the diverse narrative views of the issue, which provides abreakthrough point for studying cross-strait news coverage.In this research paper, I use the framework theory of communication studies,select the coverage on "Self-guided tour in Taiwan" from two representativenewspapers in mainland China and Taiwan------as research objects, confine the timein a year from2011-06-28to2012-06-28and receive330coverages as samples.Having employed SPSS17.0Software, I census and analyze28categories of6aspectsincluding coverage amount, coverage type, news source, coverage theme, coveragelength, coverage attitude, etc. Apart from that, I also discuss about "whether there aredifferences,if so, what they are" from cross-strait coverages. Furthermore, I illustratedistinctive coverage framework and the reasons for this of these two newspaperswhich are embodied in their coverages on "self-guided tour in Taiwan".Analyzing from the coverage samples, I argue that following tendencies arepresented from their coverages on "self-guided tour in Taiwan": first, coverageamount of "The United Daily News" outnumbers "People’s Daily Overseas Edition"and the difference of coverage length is obvious. Second, in terms of coverage type,coverage source, coverage theme and coverage attitude, there are both similarities anddifferences: message is the main coverage type, they both apply active attitude onreporting what influences have been brought to related industries and their strategies,and both pay attention to the process of the practice of this assignment. Third,"People’s Daily Overseas Edition" reports with dispatch, feature reportage and deepcoverage, highlights "other" news sources and focuses more on how the issue hasinfluenced cross-strait relationship. However,"The United Daily News" mostly usesofficial information in Taiwan, highlights discussion on the conduct of "Individuals come visiting Taiwan from mainland China" and gives suggestions.Therefore, we can see the similarities and differences on coverage framework ofthese two newspapers: they both conclude political factors and have obvious tendency."People’s Daily Overseas Edition" values big environment while "The United DailyNews" values localization. In addition, I argue that differences of ideology, mediaposition and media system has influenced the cross-strait coverage frameworks.
