A Comparative Analysis Of The Framework Of ECFA Reports Between Newspapers In Taiwan And Mainland China

ECFA is the abbreviation of the "Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement".It is undoubtedly the most important event of the year2010between the two sides ofthe Taiwan Straits. After several rounds of discusses in two years, the leaders ofARATS and SEF signed the cooperation agreement on June29,2010,which Coversthe main economic activities between the two sides, including many aspects of tradein goods, trade in services, investment, economic cooperation. It covers a wide rangewhich marked cross-strait relations into a new historical stage. ECFA is not only thehot news, but also a pending in-depth study of important issues in terms of thejournalism and communication studies.This study selected two different newspapers in mainland China and Taiwan-People’s Daily Overseas Edition and the United Daily News on the ECFA of326manuscripts for the sample, sample selection to June29,2010when ECFA signed onas a starting point, in December31,2010for the end.The research method is the communication framework of the theoreticalprinciples of a comparative study. With SPSS18.0software, the categories includesthe report genre, the report topic, sources, and the tone of coverage of ECFA, thereported length, the specific industry fields influenced by ECFA,ECFA substantialinfluence on both sides of the Taiwan straits. Mainland China and Taiwan newsreports of the two newspapers refraction presented by the ECFA framework. Itexplores the cross-strait media of ECFA events with different subjective views andarchitecture, the operating mechanism of the framework reported in the press, andproposed unbiased recommendations.According to the two kinds of sample analysis, this study suggests thatcross-strait newspapers for ECFA reports showing different reporting framework, but some aspects showing a certain convergence. In the reports of the genre, news ispriority, and comment is the proportion of the second. Report on the subject,"ECFAand the island’s political affairs" and" the influence to cross-strait economic and tradeof the ECFA "are the themes that two media paying the most attention to. Two kindsof media have adopted "journalists and newspaper speech","expert scholar "and "themainland or Taiwan official" as main sources. For report tone, the media about theECFA report showed obvious political bias and two media reports of ECFA are partialpositive attitude. Two media pay the most attention to "Taiwan’s political situationand the election". In addition "generalized economic and trade" is both more attentionof the field.There are also differences between the two newspapers reporting frame. Fromthe report quantity,253samples of" United Daily News" are significantly higher than73samples of" the people’s Daily Overseas Edition". Reports in theme andinformation sources are more rich and variety in "The Associated Press"."People’sDaily overseas edition" has no negative tone. One focus on macro and the other paysattention to the micro about the attention fields. About the essence of the ECFAinfluence,"the Associated Press" pays attention to the island, but "People’s Dailyoverseas edition" pays attention to the cooperation between the Taiwan and mainland."People’s Daily overseas edition" and" United Daily News" for ECFA reports showeddifferent reporting frame, which is composed of two media’s own location decision.According to the two newspapers reported framework for comparative, thisresearch suggests that the media should pay more attention to the balance of report toprevent one-way conversation situation in order to fully show the whole event to theaudience. Secondly, the media should improve the comprehensive report, concern formore diverse, increase the amount of information in the article as much as possible. Inaddition the media should strengthen cross-strait news exchange and cooperation,promote cross-strait public opinion continues to move in favor of cross-strait relationsharmonious development direction.
