In recent years, with the rapid development of the laser and computer technique, laser-carving technique in processing field has got more extensive application. Laser engraving technology is a relatively common form of processing techniques. The laser engraving method has the features of non-connect, low-noise and high speed. It’s very suitable for engraving nonmetal, and is widely used in advertising, clothing, printing, handicrafts and other industries. Therefore, the independent research and development of the laser engraving machine controller are of great significance for China’s development.In this paper the laser engraving machine controller is studied and a control system based on ARM and FPGA is designed. Based on the machining principle and working process of laser engraving machine a design is proposed.The motion control board which uses ARM+FPGA structure has the functions of controlling the motion system and the laser. The personal computer assists users to edit graphics. In this paper a STM32F417chip is chosen as the main controller, and a SD card is chosen as the system storage.Then, the method of high speed manufacturing is studied, including time division based on acceleration/deceleration interpolation algorithm, dynamic look-ahead algorithm. When the angle between the segments is big, look-ahead algorithm limits the end speed of the segment that will make it decelerate; the residual length can be eliminated on the deceleration stage mostly.The carving methods of bitmap and vector graphics are analyzed, and the trajectory of laser engraving is optimized. The PC software is developed, which includes interactive graphics module, document reader module, CAM module and communication module.Finally, the PC software and the ARM software are tested. The tests show that the laser engraving machine control system can achieve the desired functionality, work in a stable and smooth condition, and reach the needs of industrial automation.
