Recently, as the rapid development of informationization and intelligentiza- tion technologies, more and more attentions have been paid to the application of the laser engraving technology which involves many research areas such as optics, mechanics, computer science and so on. This technology works through illuminating on the surfaces of the manuscripts with laser of high density, producing the expected images.First, the principles of traditional laser engraving and laser engraving with energy-transferring optical fiber are introduced and their differences are compared. The structure of laser engraving system and its operational procedure, properties and operational principles of the laser and energy-transferring optical fiber in the system is introduced.Then, the controlling system is designed based on the S3C2440 micro- processor as its core, and its hardware structure and interface circuit is analyzed. It is a brand new point compared with the traditional laser engraving system which controls the stepper motor with Personal Computer.Furthermore, the structure and operational procedure of the stepper motor is analyzed in detail, which is the key part of the engraving system. Based on this, we analyze in a further step the process of controlling of the S3C2440 chip to the stepper motor as well as the burning and debugging of the programs in the environment of ADS1.2 and U-BOOT Porting. Then we design the driver of the stepper motor based on S3C2440 embedded system.Finally, aiming at the singleness problem of the engraved images, a method on image processing based on multi-level grayscale image engraving is proposed, the levels of the grayscales of the images are analyzed, level-8 grayscale images which meet the requirement of laser engraving are created. This method is easy and feasible. Meanwhile, the scanning method for multi-gra- yscale engraving has also been proposed. This method overcomes the error problem brought by frequent variation of the laser power in former methods, and is more suitable for image engraving with multi-grayscales.
