Study On The Relationship Between Ku Hung-ming And The Foreign Language Paper In China(1883—1928)

In1879, Ku Hung-ming published an English poetry——"The Wu Shih-shan Affair" on Hong Kong Daily Press. Since then he has been kept in connection with the Press, especially the foreign newspapers in China for49years, until his death in1928. The close contacts and lots of English letters (1884-1921) between Ku Hungming and Lockhart who was the chief executive at Weihaiwei have been found recently. The correspondences between them have maintained for37years, until Lockhart retired from Weihaiwei and left China in1921. These letters refer to many academic discussions and Ku Hungming’s unpublished original manuscripts, including the complex relationships between Ku and foreign language press in China, as well as the foreign-related case about the news parties.Lockhart played an important role in referring and intervening. But the present researches on Ku Hung-ming ignored this important person in Ku’s interpersonal relationship.According to the larger number of letters between Ku Hungming and Lockhart, we collected Ku Hung-ming’s original articles which were published in the foreign langue paper in China, including North China Standard, North China Daily News, Millard’s Review, The Journal of North China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society andPeking Gazette. So the thesis is based on these martial, thus to analyze the complex relationship between Ku Hung-ming and these papers. The first part is to introduce the research status quo, purpose, significance and problems in the future. The second one is to describe the background, referring to the discovery of the letters between Ku and Lockhart, the reason why Ku attached great importance to the foreign language paper in China. The third part summarizes the relationship between Ku and the Press. The forth part mainly focus on the relationship between Ku and The North China Daily News. It has three stages, including the formation of influence, Public criticism, and interruption. The fifth part study on the relationship between Ku and The North China Standard, and analyze the tragic destiny of Ku and his traditional culture. In the sixth part, we relate the relationship between Ku and other foreign language paper. Last, by synthesizing all the analysis, we confer the feature of the relationship between Ku Hung-ming and the foreign language papers.Literature search and content analysis are used in this thesis. It fully analyzes the relationship between Ku Hung-ming and the foreign language papers in the perspective of the journalism history, and make a research on his journalistic activities in the cross of Maintenance and dissemination of traditional culture. We hope it would be the supplement of the research on Ku Hung-ming. On the other hand, based on the original newspaper, this thesis will make a textual research on the "collected works of Ku Hung-ming", and collected its error.
