Wireless Remote Meter Reading System

Currently, most of the country still using manual meter reading, so that the meter reading staff going door to door caused a huge amount of work and pulled the meter reading costs. However, the manual meter reading don’t guarantee the accuracy and timeliness, directly affecting water company’s efficiency. The development of information technology promote the automatic meter reading system, the existing meter reading program primarily through the laying of cable, but restrict of complex reality environment, the plot that already exist need to re-laying of the cable is not realistic, wireless meter reading solutions can effectively transmit the data, and also avoid the trouble of laying cables, it has strong practicalityThis paper presents a practical solution of wireless remote meter reading system, using the combination of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) technology and wireless sensor networks (WSN) technology. In this program, WSN collector using wireless wake-up approach to read water meters, WSN will bring together collector’s multiple data logger to concentrator which interconnect with the server through GPRS network. This paper focuses on the software design process of concentrator coordinator side and embedded (ARM) side, the coordinator side is responsible for the establishment and management of network, the communication with WSN collector, ARM side is responsible for parsing the platform’s command and execution operations, local Storage and uploading the real-time, freeze data and so on.This system has been running smoothly for many months in a trial-type plot, the test proved that the system achieves the desired effect of the customer, and the using of combination of GPRS and WSN two way radio greatly reduces the cost of installation and running. With easy installation and management, low maintenance cost, flexible network settings, it has great promotional value.
