With the development of the WSN (Wireless Sensor Networks) technology, it has begun to bewidely used for the fields of public services, such as gas meter reading, thanks to the features oflow-power consumption, low cost, distribution and self-organization, and has made some progress. The main purpose of my topic is, to design and develop a wireless remote transmission meterreading system which is intelligent, low-power consumption and high efficiency. The wireless remote transmission meter reading system consists of WSNs located in worksiteand management backend. This paper focuses on the aspect of design and development of WSN,including RF (Ratio Frequency) system, protocols of WSN, system solutions, hardware andsoftware of relevant equipments, etc. This system is developed to solve bottlenecks of wirelesscommunication and low-power consumption problems in the pre-systems. In addition to the mainpart of the paper, the beginning of the paper has included the introduction of the theoretical basis ofWSN and the research status of the remote transmission meter reading technology. In the end of thepaper, we carried on a series of tests and verifications of our design in real circumstance, mainlytesting the performance of RF system, low-power consumption, protocols, etc.The tests turned out to verify the soundness and validity of our design. The system is able tobreakthrough the insufficient of previous meter reading system, meet requirements of cityapplication scenarios with wide-range, time-limit and centralized control, support the gas companyto make effective decision, enhance customer satisfaction, and convenient for daily life.
