Empirical Study On University Students’ Information Literacy

In21st Century, human society is toward a scientific and technical information era and information permeates into every cell of the society, certainly including education field. In foreign countries, undergraduate’s information literacy education has developed very successfully, while in China, various universities and colleges have scheduled out the program of undergraduate’s information literacy education gradually.Based on domestic and foreign research, I took some samples from undergraduates of NCPPM and them conducted the questionnaire survey to investigate the status in quo of their information literacy, with the purpose to bring forward feasible and effective measures to improve information literacy of undergraduate of NCPPM according with the actual situation.This survey was carried out from five aspects, namely, information consciousness, information knowledge, information competence, information morality, information literacy education; however, the result is not optimistic for us. Our undergraduate’s information consciousness, as well as initiative and positivity are low; the veracity of information resource acquisition is not hopeful, and information knowledge is deficient; more than1/3of undergraduate is lack of essential information skills, which seriously affect their abilities to acquire, distinguish, apply and evaluate information; as to information morality, there is a big blind area, our undergraduate’s abilities to distinguish and consciously resist harmful information are still very weak. The overall level of our undergraduate’s information literacy is medium-low. Meanwhile with questionnaire survey, a student symposium on the theme of undergraduate’s information consciousness status was held in order to know about the situation of course offered on information literacy, and16members of our students’information center from six departments and10different majors were selected. The symposium also showed that some undergraduate of NCPPM have weak information consciousness and bad information skills, and are lack of information knowledge and information morality, however, through this symposium we realize the undergraduate vigorously desire to improve their information literacy.Modern undergraduate is surrounded with network, therefore, traditional approach to acquire information from books and courses can not meet their needs in new era. Viewed from the data result of this survey, feasible and effective channels and ways to strengthen undergraduate’s information literacy consciousness, practice and training to increase information literacy skills, as well as propaganda and guidance to reinforce information literacy morality and so on would be vital important measures to improve undergraduate’s information literacy diathesis, learning efficiency and professional skills.This paper is expected to provide empirical material for the college teaching planning, and the teachers of related courses to improve undergraduate’s information literacy, as well as librarians. With joint efforts, our undergraduate’s information literacy would be improved further.
