| With the coming of the knowledge society, lifelong study is no longer just the best wishes for people, but a unified requirement for all the members of the society, including the seniors in the society. Reading is an indispensable way of learning, so it is the responsibility and obligation of society managers to pay attention to and meet the reading needs of seniors people. As the pace of cities’ aging is getting more and more quick, the developed countries in the world have marched into the aging society. China, the world’s most populous nation, entered the aging society in the year of1999. With the increasing aging population, how to use the public library, the backbone of the spiritual civilization, to provide the seniors with healthy and rich cultural resources and services, is a task that should not be ignored. And it is also the one, at the same time, that can not be neglected, to let them taste the real happiness that they’ve achieved from their actions of teaching and learning when they are old.At present, senior people belong to the vulnerable groups,for they live in the society with their reading needs being neglected. In various promotion projects of library services of reading, more attention is paid to the reading of teenagers, but the reading of the growing numbers of the seniors is ignored. And this goes against the ideal of public library to treat every reader equally.Therefore, in the current aging era, it is meaningful to conduct the investigation on the reading situation of cities’ senior people, by means of which people can improve the public library’s service pattern, elevate its quality of service and also promote the harmonious development of the society.Thus, this paper first lists the theories and practices of the seniors’ reading service at home and abroad, and elaborates the significant of related researches.In order to know more about the seniors’ reading situation, mainly from the point of cities’ seniors reading needs, this paper uses the methods of social investigation. According to Nanjing’s latest demographic data and its humanistic characteristic, the author selects the districts of Xuanwu, Baixia, Qinhuai, Gulou, Jianye and Xiaguan as the investigate areas, from which, the author does the investigation on about1000senior people at the places of parks, libraries, communities, universities and also the people’s square, where the seniors are gathered. By doing this, the author can know better of the seniors reading needs. Though the analysis, the author has found out the features of the cities’ seniors activities, their needs of reading, their opinions on digital reading, their suggestions and requirements of library’s service and so on.At the same time, the author summarizes the foreign public library’s service pattern of the seniors reading, from the aspects of library’s standard, library’s services, library’s legislation, publications and social security system, by doing literature investigation researches on two counties, America and Japan, which have higher level on their library enterprise.According to the survey data and the theories and practices of olds reading service of foreign public libraries, the author establishes the patterns, such as the distribution pattern of public libraries’ services, public libraries’ service pattern, and also the organizational mechanism pattern of the seniors reading, respectively, which are suitable for our country’s seniors reading needs. Based on this, the author puts forward the suggestions that it is so useful to strengthen the leading role of the government department and also the public libraries, prosper the markets of the reading publishing, improve the quality of communities’ senior people’s reading services, and also expand the contexts of the reading service, that it can help the government’s management department to complete the senior reading service system effectively, and provide some references on the better construction of the seniors reading environment. |
