The prevailing applications of Internet technologies in an ever-changing information age alter profoundly the way people prefer to read. In an ever-changing social environment, it is demanded to stick to the values toward traditional reading behavior on the one hand; on the other hand, to take in newly-emerged ways of reading. For the students in primary and middle schools, they are undergoing a crucial phase during which their body and soul are cultivated, and a mindset of knowing the world and themselves is formulated. For one thing, they are full of hope and innovation; for another, they are lack of guidance. It is by means of reading, a self-learning way, that those students internalize the rich knowledge embedded in reading materials as resources of self-cultivation.With this view in the mind, I conducted a status quo research of library reading guidance in primary and middle schools in order to improve reading service for the students. In this paper, I defined and delimited the semantic interpretations of several concepts relating to reading, reading guidance and libraries in primary and middle schools at the first place. Then, I reviewed related literature of theories and practice so far both at home and abroad. Finally, I elaborated the significance of doing this research nowadays. In order to knowing better the status quo of library reading guidance in primary and middle schools, as well as readers’demands, the author resorted to the approach of social investigation. Mainly relying on questionnaire surveys supplemented with field surveys, the author conducted the research in a scale of600students and librarians from six schools in the north, central and south regions in Jiangsu province as investigation samples. By means of collecting and analyzing research data, the author acquired a deeper understanding of general information about readers and librarians, of the status quo of book reading (including such influential factors as reading subjects, reading habits, reading perferences, reading difficulites, reading resource and reading competency), and of the status quo of reading guidance (including guide, students, reading skills direction, guide frequency, guide approaches, guide preparation and guide efficiency).Meanwhile, the author did a research about reading service in such countries where teenagers enjoy relatively higher level of service, like America,British and Japan in terms of the history of reading service provision, library legislature progression, reading service activities for minors and cultivation of professsional librarians for kids. Based on the findings from the research and knowledge of serving models in developped countries, the principles of providing reading service for minors have been proposed.According to research data and referring to theories and practice of reading service for minors both at home and abroad, the author of this thesis devised a well-formulated library system for primary and middle school students in conformity with service recipients’needs, a personalized reading service model, a practical resource integration model, a model for building professional teams and a network model for multi-recipients’cooperation. Furthermore, for the purpose of improving the reading service and setting up a high-quality reading environment for students in libraries, the author emphasized the leading role those administrative organizations have played and stated the necessity of legal protection, scientific integration of library resources, multi-measures of service provision and the ever-optimizing structure of personnels in the libraries.
