This paper attempts to delineate the media image of Chinese national leaders byanalyzing reports on Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao in the most representative domesticnewspaper People’s Daily, during events like the earthquake of Yushu and the WorldExpo. Sample reports have been analyzed with the Image Theory and communicationAgenda Setting Theory.The present study notices that People’s Daily castes positive images of both HuJintao and Wen Jiabao in all its related reports. Hu Jintao is portrayed as a competentand stately leader while Wen Jiabao is demonstrated as one who is kind, wise anddiligent. The paper concludes that China Daily is highly consistent in the way andperspective when it reports foreign affairs in which the national leaders are engaged in.Secondly both two leaders are shaped in different images in different agendas andscenes made by the media. For the proposition, People’s Daliy mostly report thearrangements of President Hu Jintao and Primer Wen Jiabao through intellectual news,meanwhile with sentimental correspondence and comments to cover the civilianschedule. Thirdly, the paper found that the images of this two leaders in People’sDaliy was too limited and perfect, it can not represent the real fact.This study also finds out three methods to develop the media image of Chinesenational leaders inland.1). Enhance the depth of news analysis and commentary, and cultivateprofessional political commentator.2). Increase the coverage of the national leaders at the individual level.3).Take advantages of the new media and create multi-dimensional images of thenational leaders.
