With the rapid development of internet in recent years, customers require more data services from the provides as well as the increasing demand of bandwidth of internet. In order to meet market demand, telecommunication technologies also develop continuously, of which optical telecommunication technology indubitably becomes the main development direction and plays a main role of revolution. After many years’development, telecommunication backbone network has vast development with the backbone layer developing towards the direction of high-speed, large-capacity and intellectual all-optical network. By contrast, traditional access network has become the bottleneck in the whole network. Hence, representing the general trend, the access layer must step to the direction of broadband, optical fiber, comprehensive access and low cost. Thus, various kinds of new access technologies become hot issues of research, of which PON outshines others.PON is a new type of optical fiber access network technology. The core of this technology is channel sharing technology, referring to channel sharing technology adopted when information interaction is completed between single OLT and multiple ONUs. Features of PON are:it provides very high bandwidth, large service scope, flexible bandwidth allocation, less resource occupation, simple maintenance, easy upgrading and extending, as well as low long term operating cost and administrative cost. With industry chain of PON becoming mature and substantial declining of equipment prices, favorable conditions have also been created for large-scale deployment of FTTH. Hence PON technology has been recognized as the No.1choice for realizing FTTX.The article studied the necessity, application and technological principles of PON technology. The article emphasized on how to put the PON technologies to real practices of Beijing Telecom from two aspects, one was the network layout and designation, and the other was the cost analyses. The main studies were as following:1. This article introduced the backgrounds of the PON, technological evolution as well as its application worldwide at present. And then it analyzed fundamental principles of PON technology, meanwhile it discussed respective features of APON, EPON and GPON.2. The layout of Beijing Telecom’s PON network. Beijing Telecom made the initial and up-to-date PON network layout. In2007, Beijing Telecom began to conduct the operation of PON technology. At the very beginning, the usage of PON was confined by users, resources and the layout, and the OLT was only placed at the Central Office to provide special lines and voice services for middle and small sized enterprises. After several years’development, Beijing Telecom framed new PON layout during2011to2012. During the designation of the layout, it considered several general factors such as company’s business operation, choice of PON technology, systematic construction of the PON. Frankly speaking, this new layout was more comprehensive and advanced. This work will play a guidance role for the future construction of the network layout.3. The ODN network design and cost analyses. ODN is the core part of PON system. From three points--the usage of building (dwelling house or business building), the age of project (newly-built or rebuild) and the economy, the article analyzed the network and designed a reasonable model, and also calculated the reference costs. This work will set a standardized model for the future construction of the projects.Lastly, the article summarized the advantages and disadvantages of the PON technology in daily operation, and prospected the future of the next generation of PON technology.
