As an important material handling machinery, tower crane is widely used in modern construction sites for its advantages of accelerating construction progress, reducing labor intensity, saving manpower, lowering project cost and so on. However, along with bringing convenience to the building construction, tower crane safety accidents increased, which caused the casualties and equipment damage, causing enormous losses-te people’s lives and property. Therefore, using modern computer technology and control technology to improve work efficiency of the tower crane and to avoid tower crane accidents are of great significance.Due to the above problem, the intelligent monitoring management system of tower crane is designed in the paper. In the base of analyzing the existing programs, tower crane monitoring program based on PLC and WinCC is determined. As lower computer, PLC receives and handles information from sensors, and PC monitoring interface configured by WinCC is used to display the operating parameters of the tower crane.In this paper, analysis and research of the tower crane control system, design of the data acquisition unit, PLC hardware design and software programming, communication between PLC and PC and PC monitoring interface configuration were completed. To make the data measurement more accurate, rotary encoder, force sensor and inclination sensor were used to collect the tower crane operating parameters. PLC was used to complete tower crane electrical control and to process the information collected from sensors. The data processed by PLC was transmitted to the host computer using USB/PPI cable and the data exchange between host computer and PLC was completed in OPC, including OPC server and PLC communication and the communication between OPC server and WinCC. The tower crane real-time operating state and running parameters display and system parameters setting were realized in the host-computer monitoring interface configured by WinCC configuration software. The system would give the alarm when overweight, too large torque or inclination happened, and Anti-collision self-learning function was also added to avoid the tower crane collision.The experiments showed that the monitoring system can successfully display the tower crane operating parameters in real time and complete system alarm, which has accomplished the initial design requirements with certain practical value.
