Research Of The University Library's Information Literacy Education For University Students

The well-known futurist Alvin Toffler once said,'People, who mastered the knowledge and information, grasp the power to dominate others'. With the development of economic, scientific and technology, there are many kinds of complex information in our life. For variety of new ideas, new technologies and new knowledge are continued to emerge, efforts must be focused on constantly mastering new information and learning how to use these information to adapt to the social development. The power of making use of information has become necessary for professional learn and work.In January 2002, National Higher Education Information Literacy Symposium was held in Harbin by the Steering Committee for Academic Library of China. At this conference,'Document Retrieval Symposium'was renamed as'Information Literacy Education Symposium', and the course of literature searching is elevated to high quality education for information. Since then, information literacy education in college is the basic duty for university library, and the library is one of the most important institutions for the information education.In this paper, the function of domestic university library on information education has been studied by taking Hunan university library as a study target.Firstly, the concept and characteristics of information literacy education were described. Then, the author presented the necessity and feasibility about the expansion of educational functions. Finally, according to the current situation and problems existing in the library information education, the most effective methods for the expansion of library functions were proposed to enhance the quality of information education in China.The results show that university library has many advantages on the information education for college students, and the digital libraries, online databases, information services and information talents need to be strengthened. Through information education, as a result, the ability of students will be improved and meet the development requirements of modern information society, which could lay a solid foundation for learning and living in future.
