With the widely implementation of different new technologies and applications (i.e. next-generation networks (NGN), IP bearer network, broadband IP Metropolitan area network (MAN), and 3G networks), there has been a continuous increased requirements for telecom operator's existing network capacity. Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology provides a vast capacity transmission methods and good smoothly upgrading ability, which makes it a best choice for long haul and metro transport networks. This thesis presents a comprehensive study on DWDM technology and its application in Nanjing Unicom networks. This thesis presents a brief introduction of principles of DWDM technology including system architecture, equipments configurations, application scenarios, wavelength allocation, attenuation, dispersion, and non-linear effects, respectively. Then some key technologies in DWDM system are analyzed in detail. Current network situation and bandwidth demands of Nanjing Unicom are proposed such as network construction, service distribution, network administration and security. Finally, a specific planning and application strategy are proposed for Nanjing Unicom long haul and MAN transport networks,...
