With large-scale construction of ultra large capacity DWDM system in long distance network, popularization of user access and wide band technology in local area network, the network bottleneck has transferred to the Metropolitan Area Network gradually. Metropolitan Area Network which is mainly used for loading voice is unable to suit the swift growth of metropolitan data service. So at present, the key competition of communication operators in the world is changed from the long distance network to the Metropolitan Area Network. Establishing the highly effective economical Metropolitan Area Network which supports multi-service has already become the common goal of various operators.This article is about the current metropolitan area network construction technology, especially through deep analysis based on DWDM network technology. It proposed the development prospect and construction direction of future light Metropolitan Area Network. First, it systematically outlined the concepts, development, characters and main network plans of Metropolitan Area Network. Then through comparing with each kind of plans, it proposed that DWDM should be one of the development directions in Metropolitan Area Network construction. Then it discussed the characters, key technologies, network protection and resume, network management and so on. It deeply researched on WHI dense wavelength division multiplexing laboratory, and it analyzed its system skeleton, structural unit, operation network management and so on. Finally, it did certain research on the IP/DWDM network fusion plan. This will be the hot spot in future communication area and of great scientific significance. In IP network fusion aspect, it analyzed MPLS technology and MPλS in IP/DWDM application plan.
