Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is an important public information infrastructure which connects backbone network and user access network. With the rapid growing of broadband customers and continues increasing of broadband penetration ratio, network architecture of MAN has been changed from few-nodes carring many narrowband customers to large number of nodes bearing high-speed customers scenarios. With the evolution from traditional thin covering, low capacity, single service MAN to full coverage, high capacity, multiple service network of MAN, some promising technologies such as service protection, quality of service (QoS) should be pay more attentions. This thesis presents a comprehensive study on Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks and its application in MAN environments.Firstly, this thesis presents a brief introduction of fundamental principles and service pattern in MAN. Then some promising technologies in MAN are discussed along with the analysis of optimization and QoS mechanisms. Based on the analysis of WDM and Optical Transport Network (OTN) technologies, this thesis proposed a MAN bearing network conctruction scheme for Changshu Telecom.
