The lightning detection and warning system plays a key role in power, national security, forecast, aerospace, communication and information, public safety and other industries. Base on this background and correlative requirements, this dissertation analyzes the characteristics of lightning pulse emission. Then designs and implements the VHF lightning detection system base upon the characteristics of lightning pulse.In order to design a good real-time lightning signal detection module with high efficiency, low redundant data and hardware resources, it is necessary to research the characteristics of whole lightning pulse emission. This paper built the data acquisition system and analyzed the characteristics of lightning signal such as the frequency of lightning, duration and amplitude. This data provide pratical guiding sense for system design on type selection for hardware, resource allocation, processing speed and so on.This dissertation designed the data signal processing cell for VHF cloud-to-cloud flash detection system with FPGA and DSP. On this platform completed the calibration of array channel, data sample, Digital down converter, detection of lightning signal, spatial spectrum estimation, Multi-source data fusion and data transfer. The paper analyzed the system requirements and resource consumption basis on the MUSIC algorithm and phase interferometer. After a deeply research on the structure, principle and interface of HPI and PCI, the dissertation bring out two schemes, one is to storage data using FIFO(Fist In First Out) and SDRAM, the other is to transfer data to PC using PCIs. Through the development platform of QUARTUS, the logic design and analysis of every module is accomplished and tested by correlative simulation tool and it meets the need of system.At the end of the dissertation, the design is tested by the real hardware system operation. It is proved the design of cloud-to-cloud flash detection system meets the need of system compared the data from system and theoretical data. It can be applied to the lightning detection system.
