With the development of data storage technology, how to design a data storage system with low cost, light weight, huge capacity and high speed on the premise of performance has become a research focus. In this thesis, a kind of high speed data storage system based on FPGA is researched and implemented, which can meet the demand for data storage system used on the satellite and airborne standoff. The thesis analyzes the current situation and future prospect of high speed data storage system at first, and then describes the IDE hard-disk, ATA interface specification, VHDL language, FPGA and its powerful development software Quartus II, as well as the methods of PCB design circuit board using Cadence. Based on these factors, a Cyclone II FPGA with lowest power, lowest cost and good performance is designed as a hard-disk controller which is compatible with the ATA interface specification. The design is divided into several modules, and is modified, compiled, synthesized, simulated, routed and placed in the Cyclone II EP2C8Q208C8. All modules are debugged on the PCB one by one. When the input signals are simulated by counters, the results show that, under the Ultra DMA mode 4 at the frequency of 100MHz, the data burst transfer rate between the FPGA and the hard-disk can reach 48MB/s. When connecting the system to hard-disk, the design can complete the initialization of hard-disk and DMA channel. The work finished in this thesis is meaningful to the realization of high speed data storage system. In addition, the thesis summarizes its main achievements, and provides some useful advice to the future work.
