Lightning is a weather phenomenon, which occurs usually accompanied by thunder and lightning, while the occurrence of lightning will release a huge current, can generate tremendous energy and destructive power. In the end of last century, lightning is listed as the ten worst natural disasters. As human activity continues to expand the scope and areas, form and scope of the lightning hazard is also growing, being struck by lightning and the possibility of causing significant losses growing. Presently lightning detection is widely used, effective analysis of data collected by lightning detection system can effectively reduce the losses caused by lightning. There are low-frequency, high frequency, VHF lightning detection and other ways, in this thesis, to monitor lightning in optical band by the optical mode from the ground, to obtain useful information about lightning signals, provide reference for the lightning warning.This thesis studies how to collecte true, real-time optical characteristics of lightning parameters ,and to determine whether the occurrence of lightning by analysing the large regional spatial light intensity changes in real-time, and to trigger CCD camera to record the lightning image information. Specifically, this thesis is on the following aspects of research and development work: According to the characteristics of lightning pulse changes, to designe algorithm to determine whether the occurrence of lightning, to trigger the camera to take pictures when lightning is in the confirmed case, while all kinds of related data are encoded and sent to the IPC.In this thesis, we use FPGA to carry out the lightning judge, data processing and communications control, various parts of the program can run well and achieve related functions by tested.Finally, all program modules are tested integrated together, to ensure that the lightning signal processing based on FPGA work well ,and ultimately complete the lightning detection in optical band.
