Transportation is the foundation of the development of a city and can be regard as the body's blood circulation system; public transport is the main convenient, efficient, and economic travel tool, like the arteries in the circulation. Despite the rapid growing of the transportation system, most of the intelligent transportation systems are used as commerce and there has not been successful intelligent public transport system in our country, therefore, in order to improve the level of the urban transportation management and operation, giving priority to the development of intelligent transportation system becomes necessary trend.Remote monitoring the public transport system is a systematic and complex subject. Up to now, taking use of public GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) to remote monitor and schedule the vehicles is the most feasible and effective solution. Modern vehicle monitoring system is a combination of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and modern communication systems. In this system, a bus locates its position through GPS and triggers the in-bus terminal to work automatically, i.e., reporting the bus stop without pressing the keys by the driver. The bus keeps synchronous communication with the Control Center by GPRS, reporting its position and conditions to the Control Center, receiving commands from the Control Center and responding to the commands received. Also, the Control Center sends such position information of the bus to the corresponding electronic bus stop board, which then updates its information. In this way, the system completes its work automatically.The main purpose of this paper is to design a vehicle platform based on Linux and ARM9, getting location information by GPS module and transferring information by GPRS module. In this way we lay a good foundation for the future expansion of systemic function. Also, because of the superiority in controlling systems, ARM-core embedded development platform is used widely. The paper introduces the hardware design, development implementation, testing and verification of the multifunction network terminal based on GPS and GPRS. The main contributions are summarized as follows:1. Introducing the function and structure of the intelligent public transport system and the hardware structure and principle of hardware platform.2. Introducing implementation of the intelligent public transport system based AT91SAM9260chip.3. Introducing the design and implementation of the GPS/GPRS carrier board;4. Introducing the design and implementation of the power board based on ISO7637.5. Designing and implementing overall test plan for the system, including electrostatic discharge susceptibility test, electrical fast transient/burst immunity test, combined temperature (cold and heat) test and tests required in ISO7637. Tests show that designed and implemented multi-functional vehicle terminal system can withstand the bus complex and poor working environment.
