Along with the rapid development of construction industry, high-rise building with the increase, tower crane hereafter referred for the length of its rotating arm, light and handy structure, the convenience of installation, dismantlement and transportation, become the indispensable machine in building trade. However, our relatively weak training does not adapt with the growing demand of the tower crane, and frequent accidents are caused. Operators of tower crane belong to the special operation staff, and are requested that they not only must be subjected to rigorous trainings, but must pass the examination before operating tower crane. However, the traditional training method needs longer training time, wastes many manpower and material resources and is insecurity, and causes that the training does not reach the designated position, and leaves hidden trouble behind. Simulation training system of tower crane based on virtual reality technology with economy, security, high efficiency characteristics does not accept time, climate and the location of the restrictions. This system can regulate the operator's behavior and improve benefit of the enterprise training by means of it, and will have wide applied prospect.In this paper, first, the virtual reality technology is briefly summarized, characteristics, requests and key technologies of the simulation training system based on virtual reality technology are analyzed, so as to determine the development program that the system is based on VC.net integration platform, uses software 3DS MAX to create geometrical models of the system and software Virtools to drive the models. Then, according to the requirements of actual training and performance evaluation, the function and architecture of this system are designed. According to the steps of creating the three-dimensional models, movement models, physics models and optimizing effects of the simulation, the research and design of the simulation system are completed. In this system, modular design is adopted and the whole system according to functions is divided into some subsystems such as basic motion module, physical simulation module, test and evaluation module and environment module to achieve respectively.Among them, the uses of virtual reality platform Virtools to achieve motion simulation and physics simulation are key points. The key technology of the motion simulation lies in the simulation of the actual movement rules of the tower crane in order to improve the authenticity of the system; In physical simulation. pendulum model of hanging object is established adopting Virtools Physics Pack and the model is analyzed and validated adopting software ADAMS, the pendulum of hanging object during operating the tower crane will be simulated better.
