Cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) provides high-purity oxygen, nitrogen, argon and other gases for the metallurgical enterprise. It’s an important part of metallurgical production. The secure, stable and reliable operation of ASU ensures the steel enterprise to work safety and efficiency. It’s a key measure to improve the skill of ASU operator for the steel enterprise. The operation simulation and training system of cryogenic ASU based on virtual reality is aimed to improve the outdated ASU training process. It’s make great significance to reduce the costs and risks, improve the efficiency of operators’training. At the same time, the simulator can provide data to adjust the production, to reduce energy consumption and the costs of production.In this paper, for the analysis of the characteristics, requirements and key technologies of the operation simulation and training system of cryogenic ASU based on virtual reality, the development program come out. The system is based on VC.net integration platform, uses software3DS Max to create geometrical models of ASU and software Virtools to construct the interaction function, and uses C++to build the simulation platform. The function and architecture design of this system is based on the ASU operation requirements. According to the steps of creating the three-dimensional models, simulation platform, cooperation platform, database platform and optimization of the scene, the system is completed. In this system, putting forward the ASU’s simulation model and using Virtools to completed the interaction platform are the focus of this paper.The ASU’s simulation model is based on the detail understanding of ASU process and physical changes. According to the material conservation equations, energy conservation equations and phase equilibrium equations, establish the simulation model of rectifying column, valve, pressure transmitter, heat exchanger and so on. Use the3D/VR modules providing by Virtools software to build the interactive platform, use the Multiuser Sever module to build the cooperation platform, use the Database Module to build the database platform.
