The purpose of the radar simulator is to simulate the return wave of the target so that the radar signal processing unit could be debugged and tested conveniently. This paper talks about the hardware design of a digital multi-function multi-target radar simulator, and it focus mainly on the model of the radar return wave, hardware design, the software design based on the hardware as well as data exchanging with PC host.Firstly, this paper gives an introduction to the modeling of the return wave of the LFM pulse radar, and then verifies the correctness of the model using Matlab simulation. On the mean time, the paper simulates the design flow on the hardware to validate the feasibility of the project using Matlab. Secondly, the paper discusses the hardware design of the radar simulator, including hardware design considerations, the schematic and PCB design of the board, debugging of the hardware. After the hardware is ready, the next step is changing Matlab algorithm into programs which could run on the hardware so that the simulator would generate real-time data following the external trigger pulse. Finally, it is necessary to storage the real-time data into the computer so as to validate whether the data is correct. The debugging results show that the hardware design meets the desired goal and every software function block has been verified. Finally, the design realize the real-time return generation on the multi-channel radar simulator.
