Through the two sudden and catastrophic incidents in 2008, i.e., the snow and sleet storm disaster around the Chinese New Year and the Wen chuan Earthquake on May 12, radio broadcasting, a long "disadvantaged" medium, played a irreplaceable role in terms of fighting the disasters, inspiring the public and mental healing, which strongly signifies the reasonable existence of radio broadcasting in the context of "media convergence".Based on the analysis of the two live broadcastings of the two disastrous incidents, i.e., Love in the Storm and Emergency rescue in Wen chuan, this thesis explores the irreplaceable function and utility of radio stations, esp. national stations, in covering sudden and disastrous incidents. Furthermore, this thesis elaborates how the function and utility works and details the rendering of the social, economical, political and Sci-Tech conditions. It is reiterated that radio broadcasting, in the context of media convergence, may enjoy a broader space of development. In view of the function and utility of news media, esp. radio broadcasting, in disaster reporting, the thesis proposes that relevant national authorities draw lessons from the western country practices and include radio stations in national emergency system, improve the administration and increase inputs. Radio stations are advised to adapt to New Tec evolvement, foster strengths and circumvent weakness of radio broadcasting and exert more influence on covering sudden and catastrophic incidents. This thesis consists of three parts, i.e., Introduction, Body of five chapters and Conclusion.Chapter One Introduction.Chapter Two The Charm of RB (Radio Broadcasting) in Catastrophic Incidents Coverage. This chapter first introduces two live radio reporting of disastrous incidents and social feedback is assessed based on the ratings and public criticism later. Particularly, the fact that radio sets made an important part of relief supplies exemplifies the significant role that radio broadcasting plays in such reporting.Chapter Three The Social Integration Effect and Necessity of RB in CIC(Catastrophic Incidents Coverage). This chapter explores the concept of social integration and its derivation and significance, by means of which how media, esp. RB , exerts the integration effect and its necessity is particularly discussed.Chapter Four The Content and Approach of RB Social Integration .This chapter concludes the content of RB social integration as information flow, emotion flow and social subsystems and points out that RB may become the center of social integration in particular situations. Also, this chapter elaborates the specific means by which RB integrates the society, i.e., by collecting information at lower cost, by broadcasting information at higher speed, by organizing, mobilizing and promoting the communication with better efficiency and by linking the community as a better "emotional medium", etc.Chapter Five The Premises of RB Social Integration Effect in CIC.The premises may include such conditions as following: RB is an advantaged medium which may survive in catastrophic incidents; RB enjoys a preferably wider information source; RB's coverage guarantees its role as a platform of information integration; the fusion of RB and the Internet; the national radio station has a natural privilege of obtaining high-end news material; the popularity of automobiles and diversity of radio terminals promotes the expansion of mobile audiences of RB,etc.Chapter Six RB in Emergency Management.Examining the government information management, media response and western practice, this chapter explores possible measures taken to better perform the role of RB in handling emergency.
