EPON, combining high-speed Ethernet technology with low-cost PON topology and optimized for IP traffic, is now believed to be the most promising candidate for next generation access network due to its relevant simplicity, economy and flexibility to bear all kinds of traffic. The main content of this thesis is the research and design of ONU control chip and research on future of fiber to home solustions.The core of EPON is EPON MAC Controller Chip, and the main content of this paper is Design and Inplementation of ONU MAC Controller Chip in EPON. In first two chapters, firstly the principle and structure of EPON, the development situation of EPON and FTTx are briefly presented, then design scheme of the ONU MAC controller is proposed.Due to the TDM mechanism of upstream transmission, a storage mechanism for up-link of EPON ONU is proposed in the 3rd chapter, which is the key module of this chip. Especially, the dual-clock FIFO and WISHBONE interconnecter, which are the parts of this module, and have some creation on engineering in this paper, is presented in detail.In 4th chapter, the other key modules—MPCP, Control Parser of down-link and Multiplexer of up-link—are presented in detail. The main functions of these module, such as how to realize the process of discovery and GRANT information processing is analyzed in this chapter. Especially, it can largely advance the performance of the MPCP module to apply the Pipelining technology to MPCP module correctly, which is the other creation on engineering in this paper.In 5th chapter, the security of EPON and the design of OAM block are discussed. The main content of the triple churning algorithm proposed by China Telecommunication is introduced.In 6th chapter, historicical techniques on fiber to home are carefully researched, in which strong point and shortcomings are thoroughly described. Meanwhile, future technoledgy—low cost WDM-PON are introduced.
