Considering the error bit problem during data transmission, this thesis discussed the design of the Viterbi decoder, aiming at enhancing transmission performance. The traceback depth has a great influence with the performance of the decoder.Based on computer simulation, a new method to get the optimal traceback depth of the Viterbi decoder is presented. Tablelookup process is utilized to implement the algorithm which avoids complicated computation, thus cause a good result on the real time capability of decoder.The thesis includes following work :Firstly, based the research on channel coding scheme, chose the convolutional coding / Viterbi decoder because of the excellent characteristic and the moderate complexity.Secondly, the implementation algorithm of the Viterbi decoder are designed and analyzed. The desired algorithm and program based on DSP and the tablelookup are presented.Finally, presents a new method to determine the optimal traceback depth by computer simulation. The verification by computer is also available in the paper.In conclusion,the tablelookup arithmetic and the computer simitation method of getting the optimal traceback depth are not only the method used in the design of the decoder but the thesis's innovation as well.
