University Library In The Digital Environment Reference Service

Facing the unprecedented changes of knowledge economy and information society, people all over the world can feel shock of new age. The characteristics of knowledge updating and network have been rooted in people's social life and become the "subconscious" way of work and life.Traditional libraries are facing the challenges of digitalization, and also getting the development opportunities. According to the universality of the Internet, people would like to make use of network rather than enter library for information searching and collecting. Libraries will not be the only information-treated centers because they will lose their specialities in information developing, spreading and storing.The hyper normal development of higher education raises higher demands to university library. In recent years, with the reform of higher education, the quantity of enrollment and specialized subjects has been increasing rapidly. That situation makes the library hard to serve too many students with limited spaces. Meanwhile, the complex of specialized subjects is another severe challenge to librarians for better service unless they have got rich knowledge in many fields. Knowledge economy is based on knowledge updating, innovation is an eternal subject. In charge of managing and delivering of knowledge, university library must catch the trend and accelerate the establishment of digital library and new service model for satisfying the users and keeping its leadership in knowledge updating and information production, spreading and application.According to practices, we deeply recognize the necessity and urgency of university library service reform in digital environment, especially the reform of reference service. In chapter 1, the author makes the statement on the project conditions, relative literatures and approaches used in this thesis.Network gives university library more opportunities to develop. According to the proof by practices, we are sure that traditional library cannot be replaced by digital library. In the predictable future, hybrid library may the best choice. The service structure of university library combined by two parts: technology and people, model depends on technology and results depend on people. We see that the digital library will exist with traditional library, and the hybrid library is the orientation of the future library. This thesis systemically analyzes development direction and constraints of university library's reference service with the approaches of situations investigation, case study and scientific abstraction.In chapter 2, the author analyzes the hybrid library in details on its original, meaning and situations, and explains the influence of hybrid library on university library's development and position of our country. In chapter 3, the author clarifies the reference model of university hybrid library and clearly explains the changing collections on service model, process and tools comparing with the traditional library. Inchapter 4, the author explains that the development of university library depends on organizational structure, resources structure and human resource.Traditional "one to one" reference model can't satisfy the actual needs of the users already because of complexities of users, resources and service. In view of the great amount of information, people can get the information more extensive and convenient, but vacant also. The users don't need the simple information any longer, they have a preference for the integrated information products. At the same time, the activities of teaching and studying put forward the higher requests to library information service, they need deeper knowledge services. The core service of university library has changed from "information-focused" to "user-focused" and the evaluation of reference quality will be focused on capability of information controlling.
