Knowledge management is one of the new management patterns in the era of knowledgeeconomy. The experts and learners of information science and library science in domestic andforeign countries show great concerns on the applications of knowledge management inlibrary service. Relevant research and practices of knowledge management and library servicehave already been started. The characteristics of knowledge management enable it to have aclose relationship with library service. The library service refers to the applications of thetheories and methods of knowledge management, disposing and using the resources oflibraries reasonably to fully satisfy the increasing demands of users in the information era,promoting all kinds of functions of the modern libraries to play well in the whole process.The contents of library service mainly inclusive of the following four aspects: dominantknowledge management, recessive knowledge management, knowledge transformationmanagement, the alliance and knowledge application and sharing. As a brand new andcomparative more advanced management theory, the implementation of knowledgemanagement in library is comprehensive (internal management and foreign services areincluded), and fundamental (involves a series of service recognitions, service mechanismreforms and cultural reconstructions of Service mechanisms). However, there must be aconcrete breakthrough to promote the application of library service and its practices. Libraryreference consultation department, as a core department of library service, is chosen for thisbreakthrough.The paper points out the close relationships between knowledge management and libraryservice. First the article analyzes the contents, implications, characteristics of knowledgemanagement and then summarizes the history, process, characteristics and developmenttendency of digital reference service. Find out that they both show great concerns onknowledge and human resources management; knowledge sharing and innovation; taking theadvantage of information technology to manage knowledge; and then illustrating thepossibility of applying knowledge management to digital reference service. Finally it takessome home and abroad examples to a further illustration. The examples are inclusive ofConsultation of Digital Reference Service system, Question Point system, The NationalScience Digital Library Reference Desk and Chinese higher education distributed referencesystem and so on.
