Wireless Sensor Network is a self-organized communication network, which is deployed by many sensor nodes in certain area. It monitors environment real-time and collects information of the monitoring object. These data information will be processed and sent to the management. In the practical application, some nodes will be placed the place where the environment is harsh, and hard to reach, so that it is hard to get energy from batteries, battery replacement or supplement energy for these nodes, so how to reduce the energy consumption of nodes, extend the life cycle of the network become very import. In WSN, MAC protocol is responsible for managing channel use, and allocate limited spectrum resources for nodes, so the performance of wireless network mainly depend on the MAC protocol. To reduce energy consumption of nodes, reasonable design and improvement of MAC protocol has become a critical issue.First of all, this paper introduces the development and application of ZigBee technology, and then researches the energy consumption issues of IEEE802.15.4MAC protocol in depth. To solve these issues, this paper instructs S-MAC protocol, which is based on the periodic introduction of listener mechanism/sleep, collision avoidance measures for improvement. Then according toNS2 simulation, the energy consumption of these two MAC protocols are compared. Secondly, based on the improvement of the protocol, this paper focuses on the implementation of low-power wireless sensor network system based on ARM and CC2530. This system consists of a coordinator node, three data acquisition nodes by modifying TI’s Z-Stack protocol stack MAC protocol, to achieve low-power data transmission, and then port Linux to embedded ARM processor as the embedded gateway. For the convenience of the system management and data display, using network programming, multithreading, QT and serial-port programming accomplishes the software of the system. In short, this paper has mainly designed a fully functional wireless sensor network system.Finally, according to the simulation test, when the amount of data is small, the energy consumption of the improvement MAC protocol in theory reduces about 30%. Also according to the actual test, the system has greatly improved in the battery life of sensor nodes, so the improved protocol has a great practical value, especially for the battery-powered wireless sensor network.
