Internet of Things is a ubiquitous network composed by one or several technologies, which can not only achieve full coverage of IP, but also contain a large number of communication technologies. The huge advantages, including low power consumption, low cost and large capacity, make ZigBee technology show its mettle in wireless personal area network of Internet of Things, with a large scale of applications in various fields, such as cloud home, smart health care and integrated automation and so on, which has become an integral part of modern society. Due to the network layer is the key of the ZigBee protocol hierarchy, but ZigBee network layer research starts late, continually modify and complete the standard of the network layer is in progress. Therefore, in order to technological progress and spread of the Internet of things, the improvement of ZigBee network layer routing and energy optimization is a hotspot of current research scientists.This paper briefly introduces the ZigBee technology, and analyzes the ZigBee protocol specification. On this level, the network operating mode of ZigBee routing technology is simulated mainly. Through research and simulation, the results showed that even if the combined routing algorithm protocols of AODVjr and Cluster-Tree were chosen, the algorithm did not make reasonable use of the advantages of AODVjr and Cluster-Tree, nor did it give detailed design methods and effective parameters, which was likely to cause flooding, or even premature death of the node, resulting in serious and unrecoverable consequences of the network. In this regard, this paper proposes an optimized ZigBee routing algorithm based on weight and energy balance. In the following parts of this paper there are breakthroughs and innovations:integrating theory with practice, and conducting the analysis from the network operation of ZigBee technology, three common ZigBee routing algorithms and network address assignment to analyze and so on. While summarizing the status of ZigBee network routing research, the paper proposes an optimized algorithm of energy-balanced ZigBee hybrid routing based on the weights facing the energy consumption problem, which will form routing weights through the parameters, including link quality, number of hops and energies, and preferentially select the high-energy node as a relay in the search of paths meeting the weights, while the low-energy node feedbacks the energy state, and the source initiatively breaks the old link so as to change the path. Under the premise of ensuring the stability of the network, the network energy consumption becomes smaller, which extends the network life cycle. Finally, by using IEEE802.15.4 physical layer and the media to get access to the control layer module, the simulated ZigBee network access conditions are realized. Then the desired C++ language is composed, and OTcl script file is configured. After the ending of simulation environment settings, beginning simulated experiment of new and improved routing algorithm and ZigBee original routing algorithms in NS2 environment, and make graphical analysis. The performance comparison analysis between the new routing algorithm and the old ZigBee routing algorithm is carried out in network throughput, network jitter performance, residual energy percentage and successful packet delivery rate and so on.Finally, all the research work carried out in this paper are summarized and meanwhile the paper also points out the part needing to be improved, and outlooks the next step of research priorities as well as the future of ZigBee technology.
