Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have a wide range of potential application in different files including medicine, agriculture, environment, motion tracking, machine malfunction and many others. Communication protocol stack in WSN is the key technologies of the underlying network, an integral part of the communication system, the key to make the sensor network applications can interact. This paper presents a design and implementation of the WSN communication protocol stack based on the ZigBee technologies with the feature of portable and good programming interface, its purpose to reduce the difficulty of developing sensor network applications, also to provide a solid foundation for researchers to study the performance of WSNs, improving communication protocol. The WSN communication protocol stack of this paper has the significance of the theory and application.This paper mainly describes the design and implementation of MAC and network layer in the protocol stack. The MAC layer design supports the direct transmission and indirect transmission, and support to access channel with CSMA/CA mechanism in the data services. The MAC layer management has the functions as channel scanning, data requesting and association. The network layer has network management functions such as formatting the network, joining the network, leaving the network, network address allocation. The network layer data service support network data unicast and broadcast services. The route management support routing strategy such as many-to-one, hierarchical and the minimum routing cost.This paper outlines some performance tests of the protocol stack on the hardware platform built by RF chip CC2531as core. The MAC layer is mainly concerned about the performance indicators of the link data transmission throughput and frame loss rate. The performance of the network layer is tested based on the capacity of self-organizing network, the ability to respond of routing algorithm, end to end delay and the frame delivery ratio.
