With the development of social economy and urbanization in recent years, the construction of street lighting, as one of urban infrastructure construction for people’s livelihood, has been developing at full speed. The traditional road lighting consumes a lot of electric energy annually, and the streetlights are under inefficient management in the past. Therefore it is urgent to need a reform for automatization, intelligence and energy-saving on the street lighting.Compared to the traditional light sources, LED, as a new green light source, has numerous advantages like high efficacy, long life, small size, quick to start and easy to dim. All these make LED street lighting own a bright future. Large-scale application of LEDs can achieve significant energy savings, and its feature of easy-to-control ensures that it can be easily combined with intelligent lighting system. In response to this demand, we designed a LED street lamp remote control system based on ZigBee and Ethernet to achieve effective control on street lighting.This article firstly introduces the development of LEDs and lighting control technology. In a variety of wireless sensor network (WSN) technologies, we choose the solution based on ZigBee and Ethernet in consideration of the actual situation of street lighting. And then this paper introduces the structure and characteristics of ZigBee protocol and determines ZigBee solution by analyzing and comparing different ZigBee solutions.In this paper, we design the hardware part of the whole control system, which is divided into two parts:the LED streetlight terminal nodes and the gateway. The whole streetlight node is centering on a ZigBee module, which is equipped with timer module, temperature and humidity sensor module and light intensity sensor module peripherally. It can control the dimmable LED driver power supply, and then take control of LED streetlight. The gateway hardware design is focus on the interconnection between Ethernet control module and the coordinator of ZigBee network through the MCU.Based on the hardware, we design program for the timer as well as its outside ancillary equipment and the sensor module, which is used for data collection. The whole system communication mode is ZigBee+Ethernet mode. ZigBee network is developed to achieve based on the EmberZNet protocol stack. By programming MCU in the gateway, we complete the conversion between ZigBee and TCP/IP protocol, achieving interworking between two networks. On PC, users can manipulate the human-to-machine interface to control and monitor LED lights status. The article also designs dimming algorithms based on sunshine timetable and sets timetables for auto-dimming.In order to illuminate the feasibility of the system, we build the experimental platform and field-test it in university. Meanwhile we find some problems and areas for improvement in the design and debugging process, which will provide guidance for us in the future work.
