Research On Product Development Process System Based On CMMI

CMM/CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integrated) is published by SEI (Software Engineering Institute), In China, more and more companies have started their improvement works based on CMM/CMMI, and some of them have even achieved high maturity levels. But, to most of small and medium companies in China, there are lots of troubles using CMMI due to the implementing cost and experience. When those companies try to follow CMMI to improve their processes, they still have to spend lots of effort and cost on defining a suitable process system by themselves.The purpose of this paper is to, based on CMMI and other alternative improvement models, select the goals and best practices required by CMMI, and establish a product development process system for those companies. This process system is named as TPDS.The main tasks of designing TPDS are listed as follows:1. Design the product development lifecycle model which-contains four main phases:Concept Phase, Design Phase, Optimize Phase and Validation Phase. Under these phases, the lifecycle can be decomposed into eight sub-phases.2. Design the architecture of "Process-Activity-Deliverable" to define the process system. Using this architecture, we can divide the whole product development lifecycle into separate "activities". The output items of these activities are referred to as "deliverables", and the items such as standards and templates which provide supportive information are referred to as "process assets"3. Describe the following processes in detail:process management, configuration management, change management, quality management, project management, requirement development and management, design and implementation. Identify the activities and their key deliverables of each of these above processes, and list the related process assets.TPDS, which is implemented according to the above schema, fits the characteristics of electronic product development process, meets the process improvement requirement of small and medium companies, and with its advantages of being low cost, effective, easily mastered and continuous improvable, enables the companies to achieve CMMI maturity level3.
