With the development of IT industry and the population of optical transmission system in our country, the maintaining work of fiber optic lines is growing rapidly .Automatic monitoring of cable lines become an important means for telecommunications operating companies to achieve efficient transmission network, and meet high-quality services.In connection with the failures and requirements of automatic monitoring system of optical cable, its technologies were discussed. Based on the investigation of optical transmission network in Shanxi Telecom, main failures in maintenance were analyzed, and a scheme of optical cable automatic monitoring network for Shanxi Telecom was proposed. With the considering of its economy,practicability and acceptability, An automatic monitoring network comprised monitoring center,local station and communication network for Shanxi Telecom was designed. Monitoring center receive testing data from local station, analyze and process them with programs. Its present operation conditions can be showed, its future operation states can be predicted with analytic reports and charts, the failure of optic fiber can be located. Local stations get operating information of optical cables and send them to monitoring center. Communication networks provide channels to transfer monitoring and controlling data between Monitoring center and local stations. The composition and features for monitoring center,local station and communication network are suggested. It can be a reference to the implementation of automatic monitoring network of optical cables in Shanxi Telecom.
