With the widely application of optical cable communication in military field, optical cable is required to have more and more higher reliability in the communication system. This includes decreasing failure rate, reducing fault time, ensuring network security of optical fiber communication, and so on.The primary purpose of this thesis is to present the design of monitoring system for a battlefield optical cable communication. In order to maintain the battlefield optical cable in good working situation with continuity, stability and high reliability, the monitoring system must reflect the working condition of optical cable accurately, timely and comprehensively. The monitoring system will give real-time dynamic monitoring to the optical cable, and keep its maintenance and management in controllable and predictable condition. Using the monitoring system, rapidly fault location can be realized, fault time can be cutting down, reactive maintenance is turn to active maintenance, and then the system maintenance costs can be reduced and high reliability can be ensured. The design of monitoring system in this thesis is mainly based on built-in-test technology and essentially composed of following parts.(1) Whole design plans is given to optical cable monitoring system, including design of software and hardware topology structure and nets stream.(2) The basic theory of optical cable test and several test technologies are studied, and then the test scheme of battlefield optical cable is given.(3) The test methods of monitoring system are presented based on built-in-test technology, and test flow is given.(4) Adjusting test of system is doing, hence feasibility and applicability of the design are validated.
