Combined with GPRS technology, embedded technology and neural network technology, a solution for remote meter reading system was presented by using S3C2410A processor chip and embedded Linux. First, the remote automatic meter reading system development was introduced. Then the advantages and disadvantages of the various meter reading program in current meter reading market was analyzed and the remote meter reading system solution based on GPRS and RS485 was proposed. After that, the GPRS network's security policy was analyzed and GPRS network was researched. After analyzing functional requirements of the system, overall design was determined and the communication protocol was developed. The bottom layer communication used the DL/T645-1997 protocol and the top used custom application layer protocol. In hardware design, S3C2410 was selected as the system's processor and peripheral interface circuits were designed. In the software design, software platform was built using embedded Linux as the core. The application software was designed with the client-server model. In the reading meter terminal, the efficiency of program execution was improved by using multithreading. The program of meter reading center completed functionality and interface design by C# and SQL server tools.The embedded database sqlite was ported in the meter reading terminal. Thus application data was managed by SQL language and this made data operating more efficient and more secure. In addition, the electrical quantities of future were forecast by using neural network technology. The results show that forecast load curve fit well with the actual load curve and met expectations. It has a bright future for application.
