With the rapid development of the computer technology and network technology, it is the mainstream to apply the operating system to the embedded system as a core of software. According to the quick development of automatic reading meter technology, GPRS technology and embedded system technology in recent years, this thesis designs remote meter reading and control system, which is based on Real-time embedded Operating System. This system communicates with home site by GPRS, and the core of its hardware is DSP.Commonly, the reliability and real-time performance of the system can be improved by the use of real-time embedded operating system, which can also heighten the efficiency of the project. Considering this, within the software design of this system, this thesis gives a new method which is the software design being based on μC/OS- Ⅱ or freeRTOS that is a kind of Real-time embedded operating system. On the basis of the operating system, the software of this system includes four layers that are application layer, middleware layer, operating system layer and hardware driver layer. By the design of respective layers, hiberarchy and module are the characters of the system. Middleware layer includes μC/GUI and encrypted arithmetic. And the driver of real timer, memory and UART belongs to the hardware driver layer.This thesis applies the GPRS to the communication between the home site and the remote terminal. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a new service developing on the basis of GSM. GPRS could supplies the packet radio service which is high efficiency and low cost. Because of the fine characters of the GPRS, such as low cost of building, wide area of meter reading, and great capacity of system and high speed of data transmitting, it is an economic and ideal project to apply GPRS to the automatic meter reading system.As the harmonic analysis is revolved, it is difficult to satisfy the need of the system using MCU, so DSP is selected as the core processor. Consisting of DSP which is the core of the system, extra memory, analog signal collecting module, numerical signal controlling module and communicating module etc, the whole system carries out the tasks preferably.In addition, for making sure the long-playing running of the automatic meter reading system, this thesis improves the reliability in two ways. During the hardware design, the selection of the chips, the design of the circuit and the layout of the printed circuit are all considered deeply. The reliability of the software is ensured by operating system, module coding and abnormity processing. Presently this system has been in the scheme of testing. By the two-month running at a residential area in YanTai, this system is getting well and achieves the request of the design.
