Currently Chinese newspaper industry has stepped into the era of grouping development, which is still in its infant stage. In the keen competition of the mass media, it is crucial for every Chinese media group to become more powerful and win its competitive advantage. At the meantime, core competitiveness is dispensable in the process of tackle this tough problem.This paper begins with the analysis and selection of some basic theories in such fields as management, sociology, journalism and communication. A clear frame and research approaches on newspaper industry's core competitiveness are figured out through a from-individual-to-general process.Secondly, there is a retrospective research on the three stages of Chinese newspaper groups development, compared with the historic development and current situation of their western counterparts. Additionally, the paper offers an analysis of the core competitiveness of media groups both abroad and at home, which draws the conclusion that Chinese newspaper groups develop their competitive advantage.Lastly, by applying synthetic analysis and logic induction, the definition of core competitiveness of Chinese newspaper groups is provided as well as an analytic model of newspaper core competitiveness. Consequently, the paper points out several key approaches to the advancement of newspaper groups'core competitiveness. As a case in point, a practical analysis of Today's Evening News Corporation offers valuable information for developing the core competitiveness of newspaper groups.
