With the rapid development of Internet, IPv4 address used in Internet currently will be exhausted soon; it is necessary to replace IPv4 with IPv6--the next generation Internet protocol. The new characters of IPv6 will provide perfect support for the application and development of the next generation network.IPv6 is not a simple upgrade for IPv4, because of the differences in head structure and address configuration, they are not compatible; how to transit IPv4 network to IPv6 gradually and smoothly is one of hotspots and difficult problems in current network research..In this dissertation, we researched the methods and related technology in achieving campus network transition from IPv4 to IPv6 network most efficiently and minimum the cost. First, introduced IPv6 protocol and scheme among transition period from IPv4 to IPv6 system; Compared and analyzed merit and demerit of three main scheme: dual-stack, tunnel technology and translating mechanism. Next, using campus IPv4 network as the application background, analyzed network structure between two campuses, and proposed the framework for constructing next generation campus network based on IPv6 technology. According to the policy,requirement analysis of next generation campus network, proposed construction scheme of campus network and transition technology in IPv6 network; Realized pure IPv6 network for teaching and research design of campus network transition scheme using three-layer network architecture (core layer, distribution layer, access layer); and designed new software to realize communication between IPv6 network for teaching and research with backbone network. In the end, in order to research campus network transition from IPv4 to IPv6, the author constructed a network platform for test with the hardware in laboratory. The author did three experiments using dual stack, tunnel technology and translating mechanism respectively. The experiments of three technologies used in transition from IPv4 to IPv6 proved the feasibility for communication between IPv4 and IPv6 network and the validity of scheme proposed in dissertation.After a series of preliminary tests on our IPv6 network, it is indicated that the campus network designed is compatible with two network protocol--IPv4&IPv6 and the software designed for test can realize communication between IPv4 network and IPv6 network. The methods and technology discussed in dissertation are feasible, can solve the problem faced with in campus network transition from IPv4 to IPv6 technology in current environment.
