With the great development of Internet, We are faced with the most serious problem for the lacking of IP address and the records greatly increased in the router tables. IPv6-the next Internet Protocol version, will replace IPv4 necessarily.IPv6 has taken advantages of IPv4 and overcome the faults in IPv4 by offering great IP address space and with buit-in security and mobility. The transition from IPv4 to IPv6 will not accomplish in an action, and in a long period, they'll coexist. IPv6 is not a simple upgrade from IPv4, and because of the difference of head structure and address configuration, they are not compatible. How to gradually and smoothly transit to IPv6 is a problem that must be resolved.The dissertation discussed the IPv6 and compared it with the IPv4. Some new features of IPv6 and standards about it are mentioned in this dissertation. The dissertation mainly discussed the transition mechanism from IPv4 to IPv6. The paper detailed introduces some concrete methods in allusion to different instance in transition period, and several more popular technology, such as Dual-Stack, Tunnel and Network Adress Translation-Protocol Translation, and etc.In the end, we got access to the IPv6 testbed and 6bone (International IPv6 testbed) through a computer acted as a router with Windows Server 2003.
