In the past nearly 30 years, Internet has got a great development; it brought the great change to the existing world. It will give a profound impact to the future society's development and progress and people's production and life. However, with the expansion of network scale and application needs, its limitations are becoming increasingly evident. With its enormous IP address space, security, mobility, plug and play, quality service and other prominent advantage, IPv6 will be the core of next generation of the network. In the past 10 years, a lot of researches of IPv6 have been made and all kinds of transitional technology to IPv6 have been put forward, but these technologies have their certain limitation.Because IPv4 has a huge user groups and the huge investment has been made to IPv4, it needs a long time to achieve the complete transition from IPv4 to IPv6. Different network structure has different strategies of transition. In order to follow the pace of information age step tightly, to meet the development trend of information technology in education, many domestic universities are making the upgrade and reformation to the campus network, doing the trial commercial use of IPv6, which can accumulate the experience for commercial IPv6's promotion. Research the transition technology and the strategy of IPv4/v6 will have important practical application significance to the upgrade and reformation of campus network.Compared with IPv4 protocol, the basic principle and new characteristics of IPv6 are introduced firstly in this thesis, and the header structure of the IPv6, address system structure,ICMPv6 protocol,domain name system of IPv6, IPv6 routing protocols and other important technologies are analyzed. A research to the current dominant transition technology of IPv4/IPv6 is made in this thesis, and the working principle and the shortage of dual protocol stack, tunneling technology and protocol translation mechanism are analyzed. Next, in view of the protocol translation technology violates the aggregation nature of the IPv6 routing, lost the end-to-end address transparency, maintain the conversion status in the converter and integrate with the advantages of IVI which don't need record the connection status, the IPv4/IPv6 interoperate gateway which based on IVI is designed, the load balance mechanism and IVI translation cluster are used to resolve the problems of single-point fault and performance bottleneck in the IVI gateway.A research to the upgrade strategy of campus network and intercommunication between IPv4 and IPv6 is made in this thesis. The upgrade and reformation strategy of the campus network is put forward, including construction of double stack main network and using IVI mechanism to solve the intercommunication problem between IPv4 and IPv6. Finally it combined with the IPv6 technology upgrade project of Chongqing University campus network, making a research and analysis to the dual stack main network reformation of campus network, pure IPv6 experimental network construction, information resource and applications system, and the upgrade of IPv6 etc.Finally, based on the simulation experiment, an analysis to the designed IVI conversion gateway performance is made, a comparison from the round trip delay of data packet and system throughput rate to NAT-PT translation gateway is made. Experiments results show that IVI gateway is superior in round trip delay and system throughput rate to NAT-PT translation gateway.
