Research And Application Of The EPON Technology In Premise Network

EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) is a new kind of optical access network. It adopts point to multipoint topology and passive optical fiber transmission technology, can provide multiple services upon Ethernet. EPON uses passive optical network technology on physical layer and Ethernet protocol on data link layer. EPON technology integrates the advantages of PON and Ethernet. So it has the characteristics of low cost, high broadband and strong expansibility. EPON can realize many functions, such as flexible and rapid recombination service, abundant compatibility with current Ethernet and convenient management.Been developing for many yeas, EPON has entered the step of dimensions disposing. No matter the maturity of technology or the integrity of industry chain, the costs of equipments, the serialization of products, are having been developing more mature. Now, EPON has realized large-scaled commercial usage in Japan. In 2007, the EPON consumer controls presumedly in 200,000 in China, but the whole world already realizes cut-over of more than 10,000,000 EPON consumers.This paper firstly summarizes the position of China in the international broadband network scale. Then it analyzes all kinds of broadband access technologies and compares EPON with GPON. The emphasis of this paper is the analysis on EPON's network architecture, key technology and protection mechanism. This paper also make researches on mode of network construction, Computation of bandwidth, network element and network planning of EPON. Finally, it examines related research results by EPON's application in Hubei branch of CNC . This research, the results obtained are as follows:(1) According to the different needs of the work to make full use of fiber-optic backbone and the protection of the OLT module EPON work to protect the use of the reach of EPON system-wide or part of the protection.(2) Based on actual business needs, combined with the existing network model, raised the question of how the residential district, industrial areas, commercial blocks and remote areas, the application of special occasions, such as the realization of EPON access network solutions.(3) Combined with the characteristics of the communications industry, the combination of IP network traffic, on the EPON network traffic made its own calculation.(4) At all levels by the way, the combination of different applications under the structure of the network, a network of ODN principles.Optical fiber accessing is the developing direction of access network. Now, EPON has been developed more mature. With large-scaled usage, EPON's advantages, such as lower costs and perfect functions, have appeared. So, it should be applied more inland and overseas.
