In Recent years, Communication network has gained great progress allover the world. The rapid growth of the Internet, the popularization of the Broadband Communication and the demands on the bandwidth requires good capacity of the basic network, especially the Access Network. It is known that FTTH broadband access technology will become the ultimate access mode in the future. EPON is one of the key technologies of the implementation of this access mode. It attracts high attention of the industry because of its high capacity, low cost, easy upgrade and good characteristic of easy comprehensive business implementation. Since the international standard of EPON—IEEE802.3ah—is released in 2004, EPON industry alliance has accepted many manufacturers to be its members. Compared to that of Europe, the United States, Japan, South Korea and other countries, the FTTH technology and application in our country is still in the initial period. With the accomplishment of the national EPON standard, the FTTH of our country will step into the high speed period.This paper focuses on the implementation of EPON equipment, which is composed of OLT, ONU and ODN that laid between the OLT and ONU. For OLT and ONU, we select the chipsets PAS5001 NM3 and PAS6201 from PCM-Sierra Inc to implement IEEE8.2.3ah protocol, PPC405EP from AMCC Proprietary Inc to implement the network management and local management, and BCM5398 from Broadcom Inc to implement the switch function. For the multi-business access on the ONU equipment, the IC 88E6045 from Marvell Inc is used.Based on the PPC405EP PowerPC platform, the embedded software is designed to take in charge of the device management and the communication between device management and background management application. It consists of Bootloader, Linux Kernel, Linux OLT driver, PAS-Soft OAM and SNMP. The EPON background EMS application software is designed to implement System Configuration Management, Fault Management, Performance Management, Security Management and Charge Management. After design of the data channel and management channel, on-line test is made on OLT and ONU to compute the Optical parameters, temperature parameters, channel stability and the data throughput of the entire system.
