Based on the Ethernet technology, Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) is the very important technical instrument that carries out the board band and all kinds of services in the future. The EPON network includes optical line terminal (OLT) and optical network unit (ONU). Onuses share the Optical Distribution Network (ODN) trunk fiber back to the Central Office. The OLT resides in the CO (POP or local exchange). The OLT system would typically be an Ethernet switch and Media Converter platform. And the OLT system would perform PON system configuration,control and network management. The network interface of the OLT is typically connected to the IP network and backbone of the network operator. Through this interface, multiple services are provided to the access network. An EPON interface, based on 802.3ah, will connect the OLT to the subscribers. It has the good characteristics such as broader band, lower cost, easier used and upgraded, lower maintenance charge, and according to this, it will be the best choice of the access network.For the sake of shorten R&D cycle, we chose a kind of EPON system MAC chip to build the system. This chip is accord with the standard of 802.3ah, and provide different interface. The system can resolve the requirement of the access network.In the dissertation, after the background of EPON system is discussed, an EPON system structure design is mentioned. And then the function logic of the OLT and the ONU are discussed, the hardware design and implementation of the EPON system are described, the schematic design and the PCB design of OLT and ONU are also submit. In this chapter, we focus on the theory of the AT91RM9200 and its peripheral circuit which constituted the Sub Embedded CPU System. Then the structure theory of EPON system's MAC chip and the Application design with it are depicted. And a kind of ONU equipment which can implement several control management function is also introduced. In the end, the PCB design and implementation of OLT and ONU are submit.
